If you’re anything like me, pirates have a special place in your heart—from that time that you dressed up as one for Halloween, or the first time you saw Jack Sparrow appear on screen. Unlike me, however, you might’ve already known that September 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day, which means we’re all basically given a free pass to communicate (i.e. annoy) friends and family for a day.

The good news is that with International Talk Like A Pirate Day, we’re all given a free pass to channel our inner pirates (because you know you want to). In honour of such an important occasion, here are a few books to get you ready and in the spirit…arrrre you ready!? (Couldn’t resist slipping that in there…)

It’s always a good idea to get the young ones into books early, and what better way to do that than by focusing on pirates? The Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters: The Jolly Regina is a great place to start, and so is the recently released Pirates Magnified (complete with its own magnifying glass!) Kids will also love both The Incredible Pirate Activity Book and Peter Powers and the Swashbuckling Sky Pirates—and of course, there’s no way I could include mention of Jack Sparrow himself, but happily there’s a Dead Men Tell No Tales graphic novel out there.
