Pan, measuring cup, oven, test-tube, ultrasonic bath (aka jewellery cleaner), blow torch... all the cooking equipment required to make a feast. Yes. You heard me right. I said blowtorch ... and ultrasonic bath ... and I inferred that they belong in your kitchen! You just can't make the perfect meringue or the ideal crispy french fry without them these days.
But if you're curious, I suggest you pick up a copy of the revolutionary Modern Cuisine at Home (The Cooking Lab, 9780982761014) or go to Global TV's website for their new current affairs show 16X9 to see the authors Dr. Nathan Myhrvold and Maxime Bilet in action. They leave you with a true appreciation for the art and science of cooking, and a hunger for the future when food will only get more delicious. You can watch a clip of the show online here. The full episode aired on television November 9th.

Unfortunately, the magicians of the House of Life are on the brink of civil war, the gods are divided, and the young initiates of Brooklyn House stand almost alone against the forces of chaos.

The above is an excerpt from an interview with Ian Rankin, world-famous author of over 25 books, including his latest novel The Impossible Dead. Rankin was in Toronto this past month for IFOA – he spoke to Sarah Pietroski at The Book Mark.
Sarah Winman, author of the now very popular When God was a Rabbit (ISBN 9780755379309), was in Toronto for IFOA this past month. As this title was an in-house favourite, Manda took the opportunity to ask the author a few questions about her latest book, her writing process, and possible future projects. A highlight is posted above, but the entire interview can be viewed here.
The video above is an excerpt from an interview with Peter Godwin, author of The Fear: Robert Mugabe and the Martyrdom of Zimbabwe. This book, by an author who himself was born and grew up in Zimbabwe, is a tribute to the bravery and resilience of the human spirit in the face of utter terror.
Since early May, when this interview was conducted, not much has changed in Zimbabwe. There is still talk of an election this year or next and the two opposition party leaders are discussing the possibility of a coalition to defeat Mugabe's Zanu-PF party. However, as Mugabe is no doubt aware of protests against similarly long-tenured leaders erupting all over the Middle East, one can only surmise that intimidation and torture tactics will continue to be a primary strategy.
Watch the full version of the video here. Visit Peter Godwin's website and get more information about the book at the Hachette Book Group website.
Above is a clip of David Ward reading from his new book, Between Two Ends (Amulet; ISBN 9780810997141). This is part of Forest of Reading® Festival of Trees™, the largest children's literary event in Canada with over 8000 young readers attending from May 11-12, 2011. For more information on these hugely successful events please see here and here. Thank you to the event organizers and hosts, and David Ward himself! You were all so helpful and we really appreciate being able to get some video coverage.

He is the author of the Grassland trilogy and is a writer and university instructor in children's literature. He lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife and their three children. Visit his website!
As promised a couple of weeks ago, here is an excerpt of my video interview with Rachel Simon, author of The Story of Beautiful Girl. To view the long version (26 minutes) please click here – the long version is less like an interview and more like a conversation, but Rachel's answers were elaborate, passionate, and so well-considered that I tried to keep edits to a minimum.
The Story of Beautiful Girl (Grand Central/Hachette; ISBN 9780446574464) is available today. Please visit here for more information about the book and here to learn more about the author.

Faithful Place (Hodder & Stoughton, ISBN 9780340977620) is the upcoming novel by award-winning crime fiction author Tana French. From the press release:
The course of Frank Mackey’s life was set by one defining moment when he was nineteen. The moment his girlfriend, Rosie Daly, failed to turn up for their rendezvous in Faithful Place, failed to run away with him to London as they had planned. Frank never heard from her again. Twenty years on, Frank is still in Dublin, working as an undercover cop. He’s cut all ties with his dysfunctional family. Until his sister calls to say that Rosie’s suitcase has been found. Frank embarks on a journey into his past that demands he reevaluate everything he believes to be true.
This compelling psychological mystery has already been nominated for the 2011 Edgar Award (US) for best novel — not a surprise for Tana French, whose first novel, In the Woods, won the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity and Barry awards for Best First Novel and the IVCA Clarion Award for Best Fiction. Both this and her second novel, The Likeness, were New York Times bestsellers.
On March 16, 2011, comedian, actor, writer and director Michael Showalter performed a stand-up show at Toronto's Legendary Horseshoe Tavern. He was in town on the tail end of a North American tour promoting his new book, Mr. Funny Pants (Grand Central Publishing; ISBN 9780446542104). Manda asked him a few questions before a book signing the next day at Type Books on Queen Street West. Enjoy! (Warning: coarse language.)
On March 31, while many Canadians are gearing up to watch the NHL postseason, many others are getting ready to watch baseball. There are a great many baseball fans across Canada, and by no means are all of them Jays fans – and let's be honest, it ain't easy to be, with memories of '92 and '93 fading, if not gone, and an apparent curse preventing them from achieving higher than fourth in the East Division.
Ahem. So – if you're following a team from the US, and you're not within driving distance of an American city with an MLS team, you'll probably be watching games on TV, which means you'll need sport-watching sustenance. Diamond Dishes: From the Kitchens of Baseball's Biggest Stars (Globe Pequot, ISBN 9780762769629) offers recipes from twenty of baseball's top names, such as:
Lance Berkman, St. Louis Cardinals | Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers | Andre Ethier, Los Angeles Dodgers | Adrian Gonzalez, Boston Red Sox | Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies | Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers | Ryan Howard, Philadelphia Phillies | Derek Jeter, New York Yankees | Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins | Paul Konerko, Chicago White Sox | Evan Longoria, Tampa Bay Rays | Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins | Dustin Pedroia, Boston Red Sox | Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals | Hanley Ramirez, Florida Marlins | Alex Rodriguez, New York Yankees | Johan Santana, New York Mets | Grady Sizemore, Cleveland Indians | Chase Utley, Philadelphia Phillies | David Wright, New York Mets
However, this is not a compendium of snack suggestions. Nor is it just a cookbook with over sixty (!) easy-to-prepare recipes. It features exclusive, full-colour photos of Major League Baseball stars in their kitchens and their homes, and a discussion of family, friends, and (of course) food, and the role these play in their lives.
The Axe Cop: Bad Guy Earth miniseries by Dark Horse is so utterly wicked awesome, it'll make you forget how lame you are in comparison. There is nothing more to say once you've seen the above video, except that there is an almost equally rad fan film here, explaining the origins of Axe Cop's sidekick, Dinosaur Soldier.
If you've read all the glowing reviews and want a more in-depth look at Sterling blockbuster Three Seconds, check out Version 1 of the trailer below, and if you've already read the book, visit the microsite to discuss the title on the Three Secondspublic forum.
