Inverting The Pyramid: The History of Soccer Tactics

"An outstanding work ... the [soccer] book of the decade." -Sunday Business Post

Inverting the Pyramid is a pioneering soccer book that chronicles the evolution of soccer tactics and the lives of the itinerant coaching geniuses who have spread their distinctive styles across the globe.

Through Jonathan Wilson's brilliant historical detective work we learn how the South Americans shrugged off the British colonial order to add their own finesse to the game; how the Europeans harnessed individual technique and built it into a team structure; how the game once featured five forwards up front, while now a lone striker is not uncommon.

Inverting the Pyramid provides a definitive understanding of the tactical genius of modern-day Barcelona, for the first time showing how their style of play developed from Dutch "Total Football," which itself was an evolution of the Scottish passing game invented by Queens Park in the 1870s and taken on by Tottenham Hotspur in the 1930s. Inverting the Pyramid has been called the "Big Daddy" (Zonal Marking) of soccer tactics books; it is essential for any coach, fan, player, or fantasy manager of the beautiful game

And what an embarrassment he is: he hogs the ball, complains about his teammates and throws a hairy fit when the referee doesn't call a play his way! Can the boy find a way to teach his dad how to be a good sport before he drives the whole team crazy?

Maureen Fergus, a Blue Spruce Award winner, has the perfect touch in crafting comic role-reversal stories. The boy gets to prove he knows more than his father --- always a hit --- but the two maintain a close and loving relationship throughout. The simple lines of Mike Lowery's art reflect the story's offbeat premise and child's point of view. With hilarious lessons on being a good sport, following the rules and having patience with others, this picture book could spark conversations about self-awareness and managing relationships. It also works for character education lessons on empathy, compassion and perseverance, and is a terrific resource for coaches of all kinds.

Coach Your Team to Success!

This is going to be an exciting year for soccer fans! Footy lovers across the world will gather around televisions this summer to take in the World Cup live from Brazil. And, as if that wasn't enough for soccer fans in the GTA, Toronto FC has just made a big splash in MLS by bringing in three big-name players. After the additions of Dwayne De Rosario, Michael Bradley, and Jermaine Defoe, this could be a great year for the Toronto club. With all this new talent on the roster,TFC fans like myself are anxiously awaiting to see how coach Ryan Nelson will handle the task. Of course, if he finds himself in trouble he can always pick up a copy of Hamlyn'sHow to Coach a Soccer Team by Tony Carr.

Tony Carr, Director of Youth Development at the West Ham United'syouth academy, is often cited as one of the best youth soccer coaches in England, and he covers all of the bases in this book. It is a must have for any aspiring soccer coach.

Easy to navigate, the book is broken into seven sections:

1) Getting Organized 2) Ball Skills 3) Team Play 4) Goalkeeping - The Basics 5) Set Plays 6) Solving Problems 7) Small Sided Games

Each section has a simple layout and features full-colour pictures and easy to follow diagrams; so easy in fact, they made me think even I could coach a soccer team (and that's saying something)!

That said, this book is perfect for coaches of all skill levels. New coaches might want to read all the chapters in one go to get a solid overview before coaching their first squad, while seasoned coaches can jump to specific sections to help them freshen up their practices with a new drill or perhaps ease the mood with some lighthearted ball play.

And who knows – with a World Cup, and a (hopefully) banner season from TFC on the horizon – there might be a spike in youth soccer enrollment. If that's the case, teams will need coaches and one of them could be you.

In the book's forward, professional footballer, and ex-student of Carr, Rio Ferdinand says that "Good footballers in well-organized teams win matches and championships. And it's inspiring coaches that help get them there."

Let this book help you get your team there!

The Secret Race - Tyler Hamilton

The Secret Race is not a Manda book, so this is simply unbiased praise for a book that I really enjoyed on a few different levels.  Thanks to my wife, I have recently 'taken' to road biking and have been loving it.  So with that in mind, this book is a look at the intensity of the sport which I had not fully appreciated before participating in it, and then reading about people doing it at the top level.  It is also a 'tell-all' about the doping and performance enhancing drug use that is clearly rampant in cycling, (and I now surmise in all sports).  And it is an indicment of himself and most notably Lance Armstrong.

If you are a cycling fan you will likely love it.  If you want the details of the doping regimine you will love it, in part becuase of the cloak-and-dagger style in which it has to happen and in part due to Daniel Coyle's great re-telling of Hamilton's story and confession.

Congratulations to Ryder Hesjedal! (and VeloPress was ahead of the curve...)

Yesterday, Canada's Ryder Hesjedal became the first Canadian ever to win one of the cycling world's main events, a Grand Tour. Congratulations to Ryder and his Garmin-Barracuda teammates (and to their bike supplier, Canadian performance bike manufacturer Cervelo) on their historic win! Endurance sports publisher VeloPress was already prepared for a breakout performance from this team, having published Argyle Armada (ISBN 9781934030813) in March 2012, in time for all the big races. Argyle Armada, named after the pattern on the team's most recognizable jersey and bib, is a portrait of life as a member of a top pro cycling team during the grueling European season. Photographer Mark Johnson was given unprecedented access to the team for all three Grand Tour races in 2011. His pictures unveil the dramatic forces that Garmin-Barracuda (formerly Garmin-Cervélo) navigated through during the 2011 Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, Vuelta a Espana and more. In Argyle Armada you'll meet the riders, see the bikes and begin to understand the challenges they all faced in reaching the podium in Italy this past weekend.

And don't forget, with a copy of Argyle Armada on your shelf, you'll be able to show your friends (and competitors!) that you were already on-board with the team before Garmin-Barracuda's first big win!

It is a huge accomplishment!!  Congratulations Patrick!!

The Art of Fielding. By Chad Harbach.

Simply put - What a great novel.  When was the last time you read a novel with multiple characters and were moved by ALL of them?  The Art of Fielding is a novel about the beauty and complexity of baseball, about friendship, love and romance, about perseverance and real human emotion and interaction.  Chad Harbach's writing evoked such a vivid picutre in my mind's eye of the characters and their world, and his storytelling was so compelling that I was right there with each character as they muddled through their connected lives.  Admitedly, you will read more thorough reviews of this book, but this is a Must Read and Chad Harbach deserves every success with his amazing debut novel.

Babar Turns 80!

Celebrate the 80th anniversary of the world’s most beloved elephant!

This grand new tale, created in the spirit of the classic stories, is about sportsmanship, love, and diversity—a must read in anticipation of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London

Coinciding with the monumental 80th anniversary of Babar, this all-new book by Laurent de Brunhoff (son of Jean de Bruhoff, who first brought Babar to life in 1931) follows the world-famous elephant and his family as they experience the inventive, inspiring, and even romantic BABAR’S CELESTEVILLE GAMES, a pachyderm version of the Summer Olympics. Laurent de Brunhoff brings elephants to life in dynamic new poses. Elephants and other animals do seemingly impossible athletic moves—pole vaulting, swimming, gymnastics, cycling, diving and more—that will delight young readers and fans alike.

Babar and his family see the best athletes from all over their world compete and meet new people from other countries. Babar’s daughter, Flora, likes to watch the handsome pole-vaulter Cory, from the country of Mirza. One day the two of them meet in the park, and love soon follows. When Cory asks Flora to marry him, everyone must come together to help them have a magnificent Mirzi wedding.

Laurent de Brunhoff has kept the spirit of Babar and his family alive for more than fifty years. Originating as a bedtime story told by Larent’s mother, Babar first came to life through the art of Laurent’s father, Jean de Brunhoff, who produced seven books about the character. Laurent built on his father’s work and has created many bestselling adventures for the elephant family, giving the books new spirit through his use of line and color. BABAR’S CELESTEVILLE GAMES continues the tradition for a new generation.

Diamond Dishes launches MLB opening day

On March 31, while many Canadians are gearing up to watch the NHL postseason, many others are getting ready to watch baseball. There are a great many baseball fans across Canada, and by no means are all of them Jays fans – and let's be honest, it ain't easy to be, with memories of '92 and '93 fading, if not gone, and an apparent curse preventing them from achieving higher than fourth in the East Division.

Diamond Dishes: From the Kitchens of Baseball's Biggest StarsAhem. So – if you're following a team from the US, and you're not within driving distance of an American city with an MLS team, you'll probably be watching games on TV, which means you'll need sport-watching sustenance. Diamond Dishes: From the Kitchens of Baseball's Biggest Stars (Globe Pequot, ISBN 9780762769629) offers recipes from twenty of baseball's top names, such as:

Lance Berkman, St. Louis Cardinals | Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers | Andre Ethier, Los Angeles Dodgers | Adrian Gonzalez, Boston Red Sox | Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies | Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers | Ryan Howard, Philadelphia Phillies | Derek Jeter, New York Yankees | Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins | Paul Konerko, Chicago White Sox | Evan Longoria, Tampa Bay Rays | Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins | Dustin Pedroia, Boston Red Sox | Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals | Hanley Ramirez, Florida Marlins | Alex Rodriguez, New York Yankees | Johan Santana, New York Mets | Grady Sizemore, Cleveland Indians | Chase Utley, Philadelphia Phillies | David Wright, New York Mets

However, this is not a compendium of snack suggestions. Nor is it just a cookbook with over sixty (!) easy-to-prepare recipes. It features exclusive, full-colour photos of Major League Baseball stars in their kitchens and their homes, and a discussion of family, friends, and (of course) food, and the role these play in their lives.

Go Jays!
