* World Fantasy Award for Best Novel, WINNER

Jade is the lifeblood of the island of Kekon. It has been mined, traded, stolen, and killed for — and for centuries, honorable Green Bone warriors like the Kaul family have used it to enhance their magical abilities and defend the island from foreign invasion.

Now, the war is over and a new generation of Kauls vies for control of Kekon’s bustling capital city. They care about nothing but protecting their own, cornering the jade market, and defending the districts under their protection. Ancient tradition has little place in this rapidly changing nation.

When a powerful new drug emerges that lets anyone — even foreigners — wield jade, the simmering tension between the Kauls and the rival Ayt family erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones — from their grandest patriarch to the lowliest motorcycle runner on the streets — and of Kekon itself.

Jade City is the first novel in an epic trilogy about family, honor, and those who live and die by the ancient laws of blood and jade.

MULHOLLAND BOOKS to publish LETHAL WHITE by Robert Galbraith on September 18, 2018

Robert

‘I seen a kid killed.... He strangled it, up by the horse'

When Billy, a troubled young man, comes to private eye Cormoran Strike’s office to ask for his help investigating a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child, Strike is left deeply unsettled. While Billy is obviously mentally distressed, and cannot remember many concrete details, there is something sincere about him and his story. But before Strike can question him further, Billy bolts from his office in a panic.

Trying to get to the bottom of Billy’s story, Strike and Robin Ellacott - once his assistant, now a partner in the agency - set off on a twisting trail that leads them through the backstreets of London, into a secretive inner sanctum within Parliament, and to a beautiful but sinister manor house deep in the countryside.

And during this labyrinthine investigation, Strike’s own life is far from straightforward: his newfound fame as a private eye means he can no longer operate behind the scenes as he once did. Plus, his relationship with his former assistant is more fraught than it ever has been - Robin is now invaluable to Strike in the business, but their personal relationship is much, much more tricky than that…

Praise for Career of Evil, the third in the Strike series

Strike and Robin are just as magnetic as ever.
— New York Times
Career of Evil is the third—and best—novel in the engaging Cormoran Strike private detective series. . . . [Galbraith has] invented a serial killer for the ages, one who chills us from the book’s grim but riveting opening. . . . This perfectly paced mystery is packed with surprises, all of which play out with flawless crime-fiction logic.
— USA Today, Four Star Review
Pure pleasure. . . . That’s what makes these novels so good: They are clever, tightly plotted mysteries with all of the most pleasurable elements of the genre (good guy, bad guy, clues, twists, murder!), but with stunning emotional and moral shading.
— NPR
Hugely entertaining . . . This gifted storyteller has taken full command of the new turf. . . . Career of Evil succeeds powerfully on its own terms.
— Chicago Tribune
Another triumph . . . Its darkness is mitigated by its sparkling protagonists.
— People

Robert Galbraith is a pseudonym for J.K. Rowling, bestselling author of the Harry Potter series and The Casual Vacancy. The three previous Strike novels, The Cuckoo’s Calling (2013), The Silkworm (2014) and Career of Evil (2015) all topped the national and international bestseller lists and were adapted for a major television series for BBC One, produced by Brontë Film and Television.

Malala Yousafzai's interview with Anna Maria Tremonti, host of CBC RADIO’s The Current

Malala Yousafzai's exclusive Canadian interview with Anna Maria Tremonti, host of CBC RADIO’s The Current, will air on The National tonight at 10 p.m. on CBC TV and 9 and 11 on CBC News Network. To watch a sneak peak visit: http://www.cbc.ca/thecurrent/episode/2013/10/09/i-am-malala-the-girl-who-stood-up-for-education-and-was-shot-by-the-taliban/.

I AM MALALA

About the Book: When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.

Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I AM MALALA is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.

I AM MALALA will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.

About the Author: Malala Yousafzai came to public attention at the age of eleven by writing for BBC Urdu about life under the Taliban. Using the pen name Gul Makai, she often spoke about her family's fight for girls' education in her community.

In October 2012, Malala was targeted by the Taliban and shot in the head as she was returning from school on a bus. She miraculously survived and continues her campaign for education.

In recognition of her courage and advocacy, Malala was the winner of Pakistan's National Youth Peace Prize in 2011 and was nominated for the International Children's Peace Prize in the same year. She is the youngest person ever nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. She was one of four runners-up for Time magazine's Person of the Year and has received numerous other awards.

Malala continues to champion universal access to education through the Malala Fund, a nonprofit organization investing in community-led programs and supporting education advocates around the world.

David Sedaris on the Big Screen?

cogSo many jokes start ... so a guy walked into a bar. images (1)

This one starts ... so David Sedaris walked into our Manda office. It was a few months ago while on his book tour for Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls. I was so ready to be disappointed; his books and New Yorker short stories always made me laugh so hard I cried and I just couldn't fathom of a writer being as funny in the flesh as they were on the page. Luckily, I was crying the entire time he was here - whether due to his insults or his dry humor even I'm not entirely sure.

He threatened to make one of the straight men in our office cut his meat. Then he complained that he hadn't brought his lunch and didn't see any straight men.

He did his go to - asking if any of us were smokers so he could reward those of us who were with priority signing. He explained this strange behavior by noting that the smokers among us were going to die sooner so their time should be seen as more precious.

images

Then he proceeded to sign our books, each one customized.  What you should know is that David Sedaris likes to draw - there was a line drawing of a fetus for our pregnant coworker, and a picture of a bloody dagger for Mark ... Enough said.

m talk pretty 2

The man is FUNNY.

And so, when I discovered that one of David Sedaris' stories, C.O.G. from his book Naked was going to become a feature film I was elated. Then I discovered that David Sedaris would be played by none other then the same actor who plays Jesse Saint James, the singing & dancing sensation from Glee. I'm curious to see if Jonathan Groff can do justice to the ever effervescent, sometimes self-deprecating and always sarcastic David Sedaris! Perhaps Jonathan can graduate from Gleekdom, and draw on his Broadway roots to become the precocious teenage Sedaris and maybe he can't.  Either way it'll be something worth watching! If it were the other way around and David Sedaris was playing the triple threat Groff, then there really would be something to laugh about - David in Broadway tights and David singing love songs to Rachel on Glee both seem equally ridiculous and hilarious.

Either way, this means I'm off to the movies for the premiere folks! But until then, I leave you with the movie trailer:

Manda News Update | Cinnamon Toast and The End of the World Rave Review, DAVID AND GOLIATH Cover Reveal & Smashing China with Ann Shin

cinnamonIt's already JUNE, and we have so much to tell you. First off, Janet E. Cameron's incredible Cinnamon Toast and the End of the World (9781444743968) finally released in May (5/5/2013 to be exact). You can read an excerpt hereThe book is getting RAVE reviews across the country and on goodreads.com. The Globe and Mail called it, "a good summer read because a juicy coming-of-age story, especially one with a twist, fits well into a beach bag." They also wrote, "Cameron’s portrayal of 17-year-old Stephen Shulevitz is astonishingly good. There’s an alchemy here that not every writer who takes on a character so different from herself can achieve. She captures it all..." Click here to read the rest of the article and, if you want more of Cameron's writing, follow her twitter feed @ASimpleJan.

Father's Day is this weekend so we will be posting book and gift suggestions on our Facebook and twitter feed. Don't miss it! We'll have suggestions for the handyman Dad, the-I-don't-mess-around-in-the-garden Dad, the grill-master Dad, the super-sporty Dad and every Dad in between.

A couple of weeks ago, The Wall Street Journal revealed the cover for Malcolm Gladwell’s highly anticipated DAVID AND GOLIATH (9780316204361).

David and Goliath It's been 5 years since Outliers was published.  As you can imagine, we have been eagerly anticipating this book along with a million other readers!

Here's the synopsis from Hachette Book Group:

In DAVID AND GOLIATH, Malcolm Gladwell, with his unparalleled ability to grasp connections others miss, uncovers the hidden rules that shape the balance between the weak and the mighty, the powerful and the dispossessed. Gladwell examines the battlefields of Northern Ireland and Vietnam, takes us into the minds of cancer researchers and civil rights leaders, and digs into the dynamics of successful and unsuccessful classrooms-all in an attempt to demonstrate how fundamentally we misunderstand the true meaning of advantages and disadvantages. When is a traumatic childhood a good thing? When does a disability leave someone better off? Do you really want your child to go to the best school he or she can get into? Why are the childhoods of people at the top of one profession after another marked by deprivation and struggle? Drawing upon psychology, history, science, business, and politics, DAVID AND GOLIATH is a beautifully written book about the mighty leverage of the unconventional.

Elsewhere, Ann Shin, the lovely, award-winning filmmaker and author of the book of poetry Family China (9781926829807 | Brick Books), is on tour. Leah McLaren of The Globe and Mail wrote, "Shin’s book, which she described in a recent interview as a collection of poems about “family, connections and destruction,” is an evocative, impressionistic collection, full of objects, images, scents and sounds from her early childhood on a five-acre farm in Langley, B.C." FamilyFor the book launch book, Ann smashed her family china at the Soho House and invited spectators to smash their own personal objects.  She told The Globe and Mail, "“It’s about breaking out of the confining narrative of our lives.”  Wish we had been there!

Guinness World Record broken by ... The Bachelor Sean Lowe!?

KissI'm guessing there were a few battles waging last night in Toronto over the remote control. Regardless of how the score fell in your household, the Leafs game versus The Bachelor outcome probably produced the same results: some questionable calls, a bit of dirty fighting, and quite a few broken hearts. If you're anything like me, tuning in to watch Sean Lowe court 20 girls in an epic Hunger-Games-style mêlée to the dating death is both an embarrassing guilty pleasure you try to hide and the most fun you've had watching television ever; observing a woman try to impress Sean with a flip only to fall flat on her face, watching the Leafs loose 2:1 to the Sabres, and observing a multiple car collision all seem to have a similar - can't look away-macabre fascination. Regardless, this is one admission I will probably never live down at work but that has actually come in handy for it!

That's right folks, Sean Lowe and Lesley Murphy broke the world record for longest onscreen kiss, and I bet my bottom dollar that they will have their own spread in The Guinness Book of World Records 2014! But until then, you can get your world record fix in the new Guinness Book of World Records 2013.

sean_lowe_200x200Though I'd like to say that the kiss happened organically because they had so much chemistry that they simply couldn't disengage for over 3 minutes and 15 seconds, the record breaking smooch was actually staged on a date to The Guinness Book of World Records museum in New York. Following in the footsteps of his father who currently holds the world record for longest road trip taken in the shortest amount of time, Sean can now take his place as the number one kiss-and-tell-Fabio the world over!

MY FRIEND DAHMER is killing it!

Congrats are in order for Derf Backderf, whose graphic novel My Friend Dahmer (Abrams ComicArts, 1-4197-0216-5) made it to number 4 on Time Entertainment's prestigious Top 10 Non-Fiction Books of 2012. It's highly unusual for a graphic novel to garner such buzz, but My Friend Dahmer is racking up quite the reader body count. In fact, Ibid Filmworks picked up the rights to make it into a movie! In this captivating autobiographical account of Backderf's middle and high school years, he pieces together an almost sympathetic portrait of Dahmer as a disturbed young man who devolved into a notorious serial killer.

Through his quirky cartoons, we are told Dahmer's haunting story in an unobtrusive way: we see him as a loner, as a victim of a troubled home, as a self-medicating alcoholic, as a budding sociopath in the indifferent world of 1970s suburbia. Backderf's unique vantage point elicits profound insight and some serious queries: Were the existence of Dahmer demons already an indication of an inevitable sinister outcome, or could this troubled youth's life have turned out differently if someone had noticed the red-flags and just reached out to help?

Deeply unsettling and frighteningly tragic!

Visiting for IFOA: MARK BILLINGHAM, MONS KALLENTOFT & MICHAEL ROBOTHAM

We here at Manda were all very excited and thankful on Tuesday when Billingham, Robotham & Kallentoft, three exceptional crime & mystery authors, stopped by our office to tell us a bit about themselves and their books. All three made appearances at Toronto’s International Festival of Authors as stops on their North American tours. They happen to be incredibly entertaining! If you made it out to see them you may have been privy to some hilarious anecdotes about getting hate mail from avid Phil Collins fans, writing novels set in frigid climates while beach lounging, and buying your book for $60 dollars in Sweden.

Mark Billingham, a Londoner who gave up a career in stand-up comedy to write thrillers,  read excerpts from his newest novel Rush of Blood (Little, Brown - 9781847444226) on Tuesday. He also participated in a round table talk on violence and realism last night. While you may be familiar with Billingham's best sellers starring Detective Inspector Tom Thorne, his most recent book is a departure from the series. He was so inspired by his friends’ bizarre holiday story that he “had to have it." His new novel is a cautionary tale about making friends while on vacation - with a few murders thrown in for good measure.

The round table talk at IFOA also featured crime-writer, Mons Kallentoft, visiting all the way from Sweden. At the festival, he read from the first three books in his award winning Malin Fors series published by Hachette Australia: Midwinter Sacrifice (9781444739930), Summertime Death (9781444721577), and Autumn Killing (9781444721621). Often compared by Swedish media to Stieg Larson’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the books feature a strong female detective, Malin Fors, as she investigates murders and kidnappings in the little town of Linköping, Sweden. During his Manda visit, Mons joked that one of the advantages of writing from the perspective of a strong heroine is that women often believe that he may understand them better than their husbands.

Michael Robotham is an australian mystery writer known especially for his terrifying storylines and gripping suspense. He read at Studio Theatre from his most recent novel. In Say You’re Sorry (Sphere - 9781847445254) a clinical psychologist named Joe O’Loughlin convinces the police to reopen a cold case involving the disappearance of two teenage girls when two new dead bodies are uncovered. His new thriller has been praised by the likes of Stephen King and David Baldacci as exceptional. Fortunately Robotham’s so down to earth that his major concern is being "uninvited to dinner parties" by friends who think the  psychotic characters in his novel might reflect something about his own nature. More likely, his friends will be so impressed that invitations will be especially forthcoming!

For the Ian Rankin Fans

Ian Rankin fans rejoice! After an absence of five years, the Orion Publishing Group has announced the return of Detective Inspector John Rebus. So popular is this series, the fictional detective even has a Facebook page! The new novel is called STANDING IN ANOTHER MAN’S GRAVE and will be published on November 6, 2012.  ISBN 9781409144724, $24.99 CAD.

Rebus’ retirement in 2007 brought a huge outcry from his fans and his return will be one of the most hotly anticipated literary events of 2012.

Congratulations to Ryder Hesjedal! (and VeloPress was ahead of the curve...)

Yesterday, Canada's Ryder Hesjedal became the first Canadian ever to win one of the cycling world's main events, a Grand Tour. Congratulations to Ryder and his Garmin-Barracuda teammates (and to their bike supplier, Canadian performance bike manufacturer Cervelo) on their historic win! Endurance sports publisher VeloPress was already prepared for a breakout performance from this team, having published Argyle Armada (ISBN 9781934030813) in March 2012, in time for all the big races. Argyle Armada, named after the pattern on the team's most recognizable jersey and bib, is a portrait of life as a member of a top pro cycling team during the grueling European season. Photographer Mark Johnson was given unprecedented access to the team for all three Grand Tour races in 2011. His pictures unveil the dramatic forces that Garmin-Barracuda (formerly Garmin-Cervélo) navigated through during the 2011 Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, Vuelta a Espana and more. In Argyle Armada you'll meet the riders, see the bikes and begin to understand the challenges they all faced in reaching the podium in Italy this past weekend.

And don't forget, with a copy of Argyle Armada on your shelf, you'll be able to show your friends (and competitors!) that you were already on-board with the team before Garmin-Barracuda's first big win!
