David Sedaris on the Big Screen?

cogSo many jokes start ... so a guy walked into a bar. images (1)

This one starts ... so David Sedaris walked into our Manda office. It was a few months ago while on his book tour for Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls. I was so ready to be disappointed; his books and New Yorker short stories always made me laugh so hard I cried and I just couldn't fathom of a writer being as funny in the flesh as they were on the page. Luckily, I was crying the entire time he was here - whether due to his insults or his dry humor even I'm not entirely sure.

He threatened to make one of the straight men in our office cut his meat. Then he complained that he hadn't brought his lunch and didn't see any straight men.

He did his go to - asking if any of us were smokers so he could reward those of us who were with priority signing. He explained this strange behavior by noting that the smokers among us were going to die sooner so their time should be seen as more precious.

Then he proceeded to sign our books, each one customized.  What you should know is that David Sedaris likes to draw - there was a line drawing of a fetus for our pregnant coworker, and a picture of a bloody dagger for Mark ... Enough said.

m talk pretty 2

The man is FUNNY.

And so, when I discovered that one of David Sedaris' stories, C.O.G. from his book Naked was going to become a feature film I was elated. Then I discovered that David Sedaris would be played by none other then the same actor who plays Jesse Saint James, the singing & dancing sensation from Glee. I'm curious to see if Jonathan Groff can do justice to the ever effervescent, sometimes self-deprecating and always sarcastic David Sedaris! Perhaps Jonathan can graduate from Gleekdom, and draw on his Broadway roots to become the precocious teenage Sedaris and maybe he can't.  Either way it'll be something worth watching! If it were the other way around and David Sedaris was playing the triple threat Groff, then there really would be something to laugh about - David in Broadway tights and David singing love songs to Rachel on Glee both seem equally ridiculous and hilarious.

Either way, this means I'm off to the movies for the premiere folks! But until then, I leave you with the movie trailer:

Attention all Fanboys and Fangirls!

It's finally here! Yes, yes, the new Batman movie is here, too, but I'm actually talking about Abrams Books' The Art and Making of the Dark Knight Trilogy! It's the perfect companion to celebrate the third and final film in director Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.

The book covers all three movies in three sections: Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production.

In Pre-Production, the screenplays, production design, cast, costumes and makeup are discussed for all three films. Likewise, Production covers all aspects of each shoot, including special effects and stunts. The book closes with details of Post-Production including editing, music and sound, visual effects and even marketing. It's everything you wanted to know about the making of the biggest trilogy of recent years in one beautifully put-together package.

And let's not forget that it's an Abrams book so, of course, it also contains fantastic photography throughout. In fact, the inside-front cover through the first 24 pages all feature full- (or double-) page spreads which beautifully lay the groundwork for what's to follow. Images of all the principal stars, comic and poster artwork, scene layouts and special effects shots complement the text in every chapter, explaining how and why everything was done before, during and after the shooting of each movie. As a bonus, The Art and Making of The Dark Knight Trilogy starts with a foreword by Christopher Nolan as well as an introduction by Michael Caine.

For Batman fans anywhere, this is the perfect package to remember and revisit this incarnation of The Batman anytime. To rephrase Ra's al Ghul: - If you make yourself more than just a book, if you devote yourself to an ideal and if they can't stop you, you become something else entirely... - What's that? – ...a legend...

Chico & Rita Gets an Oscar Nom!

After getting positive reviews all over Europe and North America, the movie Chico & Rita has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature! You can view a full list of nominees here. Many movies on the nominee list have been adapted from books, but Chico & Rita was made into a graphic novel based on the film. This book is coming out from Abrams Books on February 1st (ISBN 9781906838294) and would be a beautiful addition to any book lover's shelf.

This gorgeous book tells a love story between a piano player and a singer. Starting with the backdrop of Cuba, then moving to New York and Las Vegas, the couple fight and make up while giving amazing performances. This book will make you want to go dancing, guaranteed.

When Books Influence Movies

It's undeniable that books influence other forms of art, especially film. It is highly unlikely for a person not to have seen a film adaptation of a book — there is even a "best adapted screenplay" award at the Ocsars to celebrate just this feat! Mourir Apres de Tois  (To Die By Your Side) is an example of a short film inspired by books. It was created with the collaboration of directing by Spike Jonze and Simon Cahn and the design work of Olympia Le-Tan. This film imagines what happens in a Parisian bookshop after the store closes and the lights are off. The book covers come to life through hand cut felt and interact with one another to a beautiful soundtrack.

So give it a watch, it's only about 5 minutes long and if you're a bibliophile like I am, you will be blown away by its beauty!

Roger Ebert
author of Life ITSELF : A Memoir
September 16 at 4pm at Theatre Books

For anyone who has seen Roger Ebert review a movie with either co-host Gene Siskel (who passed away in 1999), or Richard Roper until 2006, or perhaps read one of his hundreds of reviews, it's clear that he is a man who fervently and deeply loves film. And considering that he's been reviewing for over 40 years—for the Chicago Sun-Times, for the TV show Siskel & Ebert at the Movies, for his blog—it's not difficult to be seduced into feeling like you know him on a more personal level because of his open and honest dialogue with his fans. Attends the The Roger Ebert Conference Center Announcement held at the American Pavillion during the 62nd International Cannes Film Festival on May 15, 2009 in Cannes, France.

It's a testament to Mr. Ebert's remarkable skills as a writer and critic that he is able to create a sense of camaraderie with his audience. In Mr. Ebert's new book "Life Itself: A Memoir", he moves beyond his reviews to tell a more dramatic story of his life and career from the early years at the Chicago Sun-Times to the moment he learned he had thyroid cancer which resulted in the loss of his ability to eat, drink or speak. “Life Itself” is a poignant and inspiring memoir that touches on his passion for actors, directors and the cinema but delves deeper into his life chronicling his painful jaw surgeries, his love/hate relationship with alcohol, his firsts, his spiritual beliefs and growing up as an only child in Urbana, Ill. This book is a must read for his loyal fans and for anyone curious to know more about the man who has helped shape the way we think, feel, and react to films. Roger Ebert with his wife, Chaz and their two grandchildren, Emil and Taylor.

If you are in Toronto this week, Mr. Ebert will be signing copies of his new book on September 16 at 4 pm at Theatre Books. Don't miss meeting this iconic and inspiring individual...

 Excerpt from LIFE ITSELF:

When I mentioned in my blog that I can no longer eat, drink or speak, a reader wrote: “That sounds so sad. Do you miss it?” Not so much really. Not anymore. The new reality took shape slowly. Understand that I was never told that after surgery I might lose the ability to eat, drink and speak. Eating and drinking were not mentioned, and it was said that after the fi rst surgery I might be able to go back to work on television. Success in such surgery is not unheard of. It didn’t happen that way. The second surgery was also intended to restore my speaking ability. It seemed to hold together for awhile, but then, in surgeon-speak, also “fell apart.”

What’s sad about not eating is the experience, whether at a family reunion or at midnight by yourself in a greasy spoon under the L tracks. The loss of dining, not the loss of food. Unless I’m alone, it doesn’t involve dinner if it doesn’t involve talking. The food and drink I can do without easily. The jokes, gossip, laughs, arguments and memories I miss. I ran in crowds where anyone was likely to start reciting poetry on a moment’s notice. Me too. But not me anymore. So yes, it’s sad. Maybe that’s why writing has become so important to me. You don’t realize it, but we’re at dinner right now.Photo by Art Shay

Essex County is "Super Zero"

Jeff Lemire’s Essex County is at once sentimental, melancholy and adventurous. The book is composed of three interconnected graphic novels that each hit an emotional nerve, beautifully conveying, through stark but powerful black and white imagery, the evolving nature of relationships in a South-western Ontario rural community. A top 5 spot (and the People's Choice Award) on Canada Reads' Essential Canadian Novels of the Decade and a slew of recognition from other top critics from around the country has catapulted the trilogy into the limelight.  It’s no real surprise, then, that the first story, Tales from the Farm, is now in development to become a film.

"I've been so involved in films that are primarily based on the action sequences and over-the-top visuals that this to me was incredibly attractive just based on the depth of the characters and the evocative nature of the story," admits visual effects designer, Oscar-winner and first time filmmaker John Dykstra of the reason for signing onto the project, tentatively titled “Super Zero”, set to begin casting this summer.

The film will adapt the story of a 10-year-old boy coping with the death of his parents while isolated on his uncle's farm.  At the local gas station he meets retired hockey pro Jimmy Lebeuf and the two form a tight knit friendship, escaping to imaginary landscapes to deal with the harshness of reality.  “I’m excited about the news and optimistic that John Dykstra will make an entertaining film that stays true to the heart of Essex County,” Jeff Lemire said to the National Post.

Tales from the Farm, has won numerous awards including the Joe Shuster Award for Outstanding Canadian Comic Book Cartoonist and sold out of its first printing, so expect the film and the book to make a lot of noise at this year’s Comic-Con!

The Long Walk - soon to be a blockbuster Hollywood Movie - The Way Back

This book has been around for decades, but I just discovered it as Globe Pequot Press is re-issuing it in anticipation of the soon to be released Hollywood adaptation as The Way Back.  What an incredible journey and what an incredible story!  In 1941 six men escape from a Soviet Prison camp situated in Siberia very near to the artic circle.  If that wasn't enough, they walk to India with an axe, a knife and a conviction to escape their undeserved prison sentence and have a chance at freedom.  If you thought Into Thin Air was riveting, wait till you read what these men endure to ensure their freedom.  This is a MUST-READ and I cannot recommend it enough.
