Chico & Rita Gets an Oscar Nom!

After getting positive reviews all over Europe and North America, the movie Chico & Rita has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature! You can view a full list of nominees here. Many movies on the nominee list have been adapted from books, but Chico & Rita was made into a graphic novel based on the film. This book is coming out from Abrams Books on February 1st (ISBN 9781906838294) and would be a beautiful addition to any book lover's shelf.

This gorgeous book tells a love story between a piano player and a singer. Starting with the backdrop of Cuba, then moving to New York and Las Vegas, the couple fight and make up while giving amazing performances. This book will make you want to go dancing, guaranteed.

Happy Monday!

Since our blog has been kind of quiet, I thought I would take this opportunity to fill you in on what Manda's been up to in the new year! We've started off 2012 with lots of new catalogues and books rolling in, which is always exciting! You can view a full list of the wonderful publishers we represent and their latest catalogues here.

On my lunches I've been perusing The Walking Dead graphic novels from Diamond Book Distributors. These are a great holdover while I wait for Walking Dead season 2 to continue on TV. My bedtime reading currently consists of Paul Torday's The Hopeless Life of Charlie Summers from Orion Publishing, a great read from the author of Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.

Ellen Warwick has been anxiously preparing our exhibit at the CGTA for the end of January. She is currently reading Greyhound of a Girl, written by Roddy Doyle, from Abrams Books. This book is about a 12-year-old girl who is coping with her dying grandmother, a mystifying read for any adolescent who has lost a love one.

Mark Wilson is excited about the January release of The Knowland Retribution, a first in a series, it is available in Canada through Ingram Publisher Services. This book inspired a new Fox TV show, The Finder, which is a spinoff of the popular show Bones. The new show starts this Thursday (Jan 12th, 9pm on Global) so if you're one of those people that must read the book before seeing the movie/show - run out and get it now!

MANDAtory Reading 01-13-11

Move over Lisbeth Salander, there’s a new Scandinavian crime thriller in town and it plans on sticking around for a while!  THREE SECONDS swiftly snagged the #9 spot on the NYT bestseller list this week after only a brief time in bookstores.  We have a feeling this early success is just the tip of the iceberg for Anders Roslund and Borge Hellström.  Read it people, you won’t be disappointed.

Jerry Robinson’s new coffee table tome  Jerry Robinson: Ambassador of Comics was profiled on Sneakpeek and picked up by IMBD. If you’re a comics fan, you’ll know that Robinson is one of the living legends of American comics, and a member of the original Batman team.

The Montreal Gazette suggests the book YUCK! The Things People Eat may help folks lose a few pounds. Check out the article here and let us know what you think of this... um, unique weight-loss technique.

For all of you Design-y types, guess who’s coming to Toronto for IDS11?  You’ll never guess so I’m just gonna spill it...Allegra Hicks!  Allegra will be on stage speaking with Amy Verner from the Globe and Mail at 4PM on Saturday, January 29th and signing copies of her new book Allegra Hicks: An Eye For Design directly after. Click here for more information.  If you weren’t planning on attending the show but are interested in Allegra’s spring decorating tips and learning more about the book, she is scheduled to be a guest on The Marilyn Denis Show Friday, January 28th.

Lastly, if you haven’t yet heard of Kris Carr, I would like to make the formal introduction now.  Kris is a Cancer survivor who has transformed the way she eats, lives and views the world and it all started with a low-glycemic, vegetarian diet.  Her program focuses on balancing the pH of the body with whole and raw foods, organic green drinks, and smoothies.  If this sounds complicated – trust me, she explains it much better than I ever could!  Her New Book Crazy Sexy Diet debunks diet myths, shares tips on how to detox safely, and even how to grocery shop!  It is witty, accessible, powerful, and beautifully illustrated.  Enough said.  See this month’s Best Health Magazine for a review.

Kill Shakespeare

Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery, along with the artist Andy B., presented their much anticipated graphic novel Kill Shakespeare at 918 last Tuesday evening, drawing a plethora of friends and fans in spite of the crackling thunder and pouring rain.  The crowd sipped cocktails, devoured samosas and mingled with the authors all whilst ogling Andy’s exquisite drawings from the novel.
