The Sunburst Award Society 2014 Shortlist

The Sunburst Award Society recently announced their 2014 shortlist nominees, and we're pleased to announce that a few of our exceptionally talented authors have been recognized! The short-listed works in the ADULT category are:

9781455528400
9781455528400

Sister Mine by Nalo Hopkinson Grand Central Publishing/HBG 9781455528400 $17.00 TP

"Acclaimed novelist Nalo Hopkinson is well-known for her unique postmodern mythos, often drawing on Caribbean folklore, and placing complex characters smack in the center of worlds whose magic isn't always kind and in which decisions are rarely easy. Her newest novel, Sister Mine, has a lighter edge than some of her previous work; it's an engaging, messy fable about the interconnectedness of even the little things in our lives...This is a book about family, and Sister Mine remains a suitably imperfect and vibrant story of family in all its unfathomable wonders and annoyances, and the power it holds over us - or gives us."--NPR

This Strange Way of Dying by Silvia Moreno-Garcia Exile Editions/IPG 9781550963540 $18.95 TP

"

This Strange Way of Dying

mixes Mexican folklore with urban life and throws in a dash of pulp flavour."

The Cats of Tanglewood Forest by Charles de Lint Little Brown Books for Young Readers 9780316053570 $19.99 HC

"Set in a magical forest populated by Bear People, an Apple Tree Man, and the Father of Cats, the story’s lyrical, folkloric style is well suited to a tale of magic and mystery. Vess’ line-and-watercolor illustrations (not seen in final form) appear throughout; they help to break up the text for younger readers and give form to de Lint’s unusual characters. Give this to fans of Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black’s Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World around You (2005)."--BOOKLIST

Additionally, the jury has chosen to include a list of HONOURABLE MENTIONS:

Beyond the Rift by Peter Watts Tachyon Publications/Legato/Raincoast 9781616961251 $18.50 TP

WE LOVE EACH OTHER | New York Times Book Review

We all know "find love before V-DAY" is at the bottom of your February to-do list. Nobody wants to spend their precision time looking for a date when there's a million other things to do like watch figure skaters dance on ice (OLYMPIC time, people). That's why this Valentine's Day we're highlighting books for kids because they actually enjoy receiving candy in kitschy heart shaped boxes and, as The New York Times wrote, "mimicking the conventions of courtship without suffering its uncertainties."  Valentine's Day is also the perfect holiday for children because it offers them another opportunity to learn about love in all its various shapes and forms. And, of course, the best way to teach children is through books. Below you'll find a few of our favorites as well as two titles recently highlighted in The New York Times Book Review:

We Love Each Other, by the Brilliant illustrator Yusuke Yonezu, is a clever and charming board book with an upbeat theme and a special surprise on the last page. Love You More Than Anything, a picture book by Anna Harber Freeman and illustrated by Jed Henry, is all about telling children how much their parents love them.  This rhyming read-aloud assures kids—in so many ways—that they're loved more than anything in the world. Readers follow an adorable chipmunk family for a fun outing at the park, a special homemade cake after dinner, and a snuggle before bedtime—and all the while mom and dad find dozens of ways, big and small, to give their children the affection and security they crave. Sarah Harrison Smith of The New York Times Book Review wrote, "Sprightly rather than soppy, “Love You More Than Anything” reminds readers that having fun together is one of the best ways families can show their love, whatever the day."

LOVE YOU MORE THAN ANYTHING By Anna Harber Freeman Illustrated by Jed Henry Sterling Publishing 9781454900214 $9.95 Picture book Ages 3 to 7

Spectacular Wineries of Ontario | Independent Publishers Group

Between the Lines Winery

Toronto Star "Spectacular Wineries of Ontario is a fabulous visual voyage through Ontario's wineries."

Stratus Vineyards

One of our favourite activities during the summer is to spend leisurely days touring wineries.  Typically, we wake up early to devour a big breakfast of wild blackberry pancakes, scrambled eggs and black coffee and then jump into our cars (the designated driver pulls the short straw) and cruise down mostly abandoned county roads to vineyards tucked away into the landscape.   It’s hard to beat a day of sipping wine, while strolling through vineyards and soaking in the warm summer rays.

Spectacular Wineries of Ontario

This year we’ll be exploring Ontario wineries and IPG’s, Spectacular Wineries of Ontario, is the perfect companion book to bring on our weekend trips to Lake Erie North Shore, Niagara Peninsula, Pelee Island, and Prince Edward County. A guided visual tour through some of Canada’s best vineyards, this book is filled with beautiful, colour photographs and detailed commentary on more than 60 fabulous wineries and vineyards.

Flat Rock Cellars

Written by Panache Partners, LLC,  which is a publishing company that specializes in lustrous coffee-table books, and Toronto author John Szabo, who is the first Canadian qualified at the Master level by the Court of Master Sommeliers, Spectacular Wineries of Ontario is a beautiful, informative guide book for locals, tourists, wine lovers, and wine newcomers.

Deliberate Mayhem & Serious Fun!

For budding spies, there’s no better way to conceal clandestine activities than to miniaturize one’s secret agent arsenal. Hide a tiny catapult in a breath mint tin. Turn a Tic Tac case into a vest pocket candy shooter. Transform a milk jug cap into a fake wristwatch that launches tiny paper darts.  This book offers a whole new array of inventive DIY projects to turn office supplies and household items into the ultimate rubber band flinging, eraser zinging weapons cache, perfect for rainy days and playful office espionage!

All of the projects in Mini Weapons of Mass Destruction 2 are built from inexpensive, commonly kept items: binder clips, playing cards, rubber bands, markers, clothespins and discarded packaging materials. The projects—modeled after real-life gadgetry—range from “agent sidearms” and “weapons in disguise” to “villain mini weapons” and “surveillance and intel,” and cost mere pennies to assemble. Each project includes a supply and tool list, italicized safety tips and step-by-step instructions supplemented by clearly marked, illustrative diagrams. This book will thrill and entertain budding spies and crafty villains alike!
