WE LOVE EACH OTHER | New York Times Book Review

We all know "find love before V-DAY" is at the bottom of your February to-do list. Nobody wants to spend their precision time looking for a date when there's a million other things to do like watch figure skaters dance on ice (OLYMPIC time, people). That's why this Valentine's Day we're highlighting books for kids because they actually enjoy receiving candy in kitschy heart shaped boxes and, as The New York Times wrote, "mimicking the conventions of courtship without suffering its uncertainties."  Valentine's Day is also the perfect holiday for children because it offers them another opportunity to learn about love in all its various shapes and forms. And, of course, the best way to teach children is through books. Below you'll find a few of our favorites as well as two titles recently highlighted in The New York Times Book Review:

We Love Each Other, by the Brilliant illustrator Yusuke Yonezu, is a clever and charming board book with an upbeat theme and a special surprise on the last page. The book features birds, elephants, rabbits, turtles and kittens celebrating love and togetherness. Kids will enjoy the bold and colorful illustrations that reveal a surprise beneath the flap on every page.

WE LOVE EACH OTHER Written and illustrated by Yusuke Yonezu Minedition (Independent Publishers Group) 9789888240562 $10.95 Board book Ages 1 to 4

Love You More Than Anything, a picture book by Anna Harber Freeman and illustrated by Jed Henry, is all about telling children how much their parents love them.  This rhyming read-aloud assures kids—in so many ways—that they're loved more than anything in the world. Readers follow an adorable chipmunk family for a fun outing at the park, a special homemade cake after dinner, and a snuggle before bedtime—and all the while mom and dad find dozens of ways, big and small, to give their children the affection and security they crave. Sarah Harrison Smith of The New York Times Book Review wrote, "Sprightly rather than soppy, “Love You More Than Anything” reminds readers that having fun together is one of the best ways families can show their love, whatever the day."

LOVE YOU MORE THAN ANYTHING By Anna Harber Freeman Illustrated by Jed Henry Sterling Publishing 9781454900214 $9.95 Picture book Ages 3 to 7

For more on these two titles, read The New York Times Book Review feature "Love for the Littlest, Yusuke Yonezu’s ‘We Love Each Other,’ and More" on their website.

In this favorite Hello Kitty story, Hello Kitty explores what love and friendship mean as she tries to find the perfect gift for her special friend Dear Daniel. IAN RANKIN | Saints of the Shadow Bible

Whether you're a completely obsessed Ian Rankin worshiper, with an insatiable hunger for well-written thrillers, or a casual reader looking for an exciting new series, SAINTS OF THE SHADOW BIBLE (Orion/9781409144748) is the book for you. Full of gritty descriptions, incredible characters and a riveting plot, this book details the return of Rebus, who is investigating a car accident when news arrives that a case from 30 years ago is being reopened. It's a beautifully written book that is already getting great reviews in Canada and abroad: ‘…It’s those subtle little conversations, descriptions and humorous details that make Rankin the fine writer that he is….’ The Vancouver Sun

"Saints of the Shadow Bible is a clever, subtle read, but most of all, it's a genuine pleasure to see Rebus back in the CID." The Guardian

"One of the joys of Ian Rankin’s Rebus detective novels – apart from their intricate plotting and on-the-money descriptions of police procedures – is the soap opera: the complex interweaving of characters we have come to know and love, or, in some cases, to dislike or even hate, and sometimes love and hate together." The Globe and Mail

"Full of the author's dry humour and lovely depicted details of Scottish life, the book is a welcome reunion with an old friend." HELLO! CANADA

Summary

new_visual_150413Rebus is back on the force, albeit with a demotion and a chip on his shoulder. A 30-year-old case is being reopened, and Rebus’s team from back then is suspected of foul play. With Malcolm Fox as the investigating officer is the past and present about to collide in a shocking and murderous fashion? And does Rebus have anything to hide? His colleagues back then called themselves ‘The Saints’, and swore a bond on something called ‘the Shadow Bible’. But times have changed and the crimes of the past may not stay hidden much longer, especially with a referendum on Scottish independence just around the corner. Who are the saints and who the sinners? And can the one ever become the other?

Valkyrie

Kate O’Hearn. HODDER CHILDREN'S, $9.99 (9781444907551)

VALKYRIE by Canadian author Kate O'Hearn, is the first book in the series about a strong female character challenging the rules to find the family of a fallen solider. It has also been selected by The Canadian Children's Book Centre for the fall 2013 edition of Best Books for Kids & Teens.

Here's the book blurb from Kate O'Hearn's website: Freya is dreading turning fourteen – that marks the official end of her childhood and she must now take up the full duties of a Valkyrie – a collector of souls from humanity’s battlefields.  But Freya is unlike any other Valkyrie. She doesn’t want to follow in the footsteps of the legends before her. As she observes Earth from Asgard, she tries to understand what it is to be human: to make friends with girls her own age and laugh with boys, without the fear of causing their death with one touch.  Little does she know that her dreams will soon be realized: on her first battlefield mission, Freya reaps the soul of a soldier with unfinished business that will send her to the human world on a deadly quest.  Freya must do battle with both ordinary and extraordinary enemies to create a new VALKYRIE LEGEND.

Sprinkles, hot fudge, and cherries hint at I’s ice cream sundae, while aquarium accessories hint at F’s fish. As readers interact with the pages, they will familiarize themselves not only with the 26 letters and associated words, but also with each letter’s physicality—angles, holes, and curves, both front and back. With Peskimo’s animated, stylish visuals, this fresh ABC book encourages readers to manipulate the alphabet in a whole new way. See more at Abrams Books: http://www.abramsbooks.com/Books/Alphablock-9781419709364.html.

Praise for Alphablock "The straightforward vocabulary, cheery vintage-style graphics, and neat incorporation of cut-out letters make for a sharply designed package." —Publishers Weekly

"With a pleasing, retro feel, Peskimo’s art uses bold colors in a slightly muted hue and the weathered look of woodblock prints… A visually captivating delight for careful little ones." —Kirkus Reviews

Books Kids Will Love | FALL READING

It's September, which means kids are back in school (parents, rejoice!) and fall books will soon be in bookstores, and libraries across the country.  As kids settle back into school-mode, why not encourage them to continue their summer reading goals into the fall? There are so many great books coming out in the next couple months that it would be a shame to stop now just because they're back in the classroom. Here are a few books we're certain kids will love reading any time of the year:

NERDS Book Five: Attack of the BULLIES

Michael Buckley. ABRAMS BOOKS, $17.95 (9781419708572)

Their former librarian, Ms. Holiday, has started a rival organization called BULLIES, who each have their own nanobyte-enhanced upgrades. The BULLIES’ plan: go back in time to make sure NERDS never existed! When Ruby’s teammates begin to vanish one by one, she enlists Agent Brand and Heathcliff Hodges to go back to the 1970s and help the original nerdy secret agents make sure that the future is not erased from existence! Attack of the BULLIES promises action, humor, and a dramatic conclusion to the series.

Mr. Tiger Goes Wild

Peter Brown. LITTLE, BROWN. $20 (9780316200639)

From School Library Journal:

K-Gr 2–Mr. Tiger lives in a perfectly fine world of prim and proper ladies and gentlemen. One day, the stiff suits, dainty teas, and Victorian manners begin to bore him… and he has a very wild idea. This “it's okay to be different” story stands out from other picture books on the topic thanks to Brown's delightfully clever illustrations and masterful compositions. From the tiger-striped cover that begs to be petted to the ingenious pops of bright orange (Brown's new signature color?) amid muted browns and grays, the award-winning illustrator does not disappoint. Children will appreciate Mr. Tiger's transformation and the way his friends eventually accept his (and their own) uniqueness. Several wordless spreads encourage audience participation while subtle visual clues gently build his character. A full spread featuring the newly liberated Mr. Tiger au naturel is delivered with pitch-perfect comedic timing and is guaranteed to inspire wild giggles. Sure to be an instant read-aloud classic in classrooms and libraries.

Dial M for Morna: The Dead Kid Detective Agency #2

Evan Munday. ECW PRESS, $11.95 (9781770410732)

As the Dead Kid Detective Agency embarks on its second (mis)adventure, October Schwartz and her five deadest friends are back, turning over metaphoric rocks and finding the centipedes underneath. In this latest volume, set against a backdrop of yuletide pandemonium, they discover dark supernatural forces at work in Sticksville and sleuth their way through a mystery involving a blizzard of suffragettes, ice skating disasters, anti-Asian sentiment, and the Titanic. Although the holiday season has descended upon the town like an eggnog rainstorm, October has no time for candy canes or mistletoe. She’s busy dealing with an oddly pleasant new history teacher, her two living friends’ new roles as high school radio DJs, and mysteries to be solved before the year end. October and her ghost friends are hot on the trail of those responsible for Morna MacIsaac’s death in 1914—or as hot as one can be on a 100-year-old trail—when Yumi becomes the target of a sinister harassment campaign at school. Solving dual concurrent mysteries at once won’t be easy, but the intrepid heroine in black eyeliner loves a challenge.

RANKIN RETURNS WITH A NEW REBUS NOVEL | Hachette UK

kOn April 15th, Ian Rankin announced (via Twitter @Beathhigh) that his new novel will be entitled Saints of the Shadow Bible, and will feature his long running series character John Rebus.

Last year saw the return of John Rebus in the bestselling novel Standing in Another Man's Grave (HUK | 9781409144717).  Ian Rankin says, " I was overwhelmed by the reaction of fans. So here he is again, back on the force but paired with one-time nemesis Malcolm Fox in an inquiry which may end up uncovering too much of Rebus's own past, pitting him against old allies.”

Like Standing in Another Man’s Grave the title of the new book Saints of the Shadow Bible is based on a lyric from a Jackie Leven song. Rankin and Leven became friends and worked together on a number of projects in the years leading up to Leven’s death in 2011. Rankin dedicated last year’s novel to the memory of his friend and collaborator.

Saints of the Shadow Bible (Orion) is published in hardback on November 7, 2013! For more details visit www.shadowbible.com.
