Get Outside With a Falcon Guide

With winter finally out of the picture, and spring officially here, we can all turn our thoughts towards going outside without fear of, say, being run over by a dog sled or mauled by a yeti. And, if we are venturing outside anyways, why not head out prepared with a Falcon Guide? falcon guide

To be clear, I am not talking about a guide that happens to be a falcon, though that would be cool, but rather an outdoor instructional book from, the publishing house FalconGuides. FalconGuides has manuals for almost every outdoor enthusiast’s favourite pastime. Do you like slack lining? There’s a guide for that! How about fishing? There’s a guide for that! Kayaking? You guessed it, there’s a guide for that too!

Each one of these handbooks is filled with full-colour illustrations that make picking up any new outdoor hobby as simple as possible. Trust me, one of these books will provide you with the expertise needed for your chosen activity in what will seem like no time at all!

Also, some of these guide are location specific; not only can you become an expert on camping, but you can become an expert on camping in Washington, Pennsylvania, or a host of other locations. And when it comes time to make dinner on one of your camping trips you’ll be fully equipped with a copy of FalconGuides’ Cooking the One Burner Way at your finger tips.

And after your delicious meal, you and your friends can work off the lethargy by taking a hike. During which you can wow your companions (or put them to sleep) with your knowledge of the local trees. The fact that you got all of your info from Trees: A Falcon Guide can be our little secret!

Of course, if your camping buddies are less than enthralled by you explaining the intricate differences between a Balsam Fir and a Fraser Fir, you can always win back their love with a few spooky stories courtesy of Haunted Trail Tales, once again from FalconGuides.

THE YELLOW BIRDS By KEVIN POWERS 9780316219365 $27.99 Little, Brown and Company

About the Book

"The war tried to kill us in the spring." So begins this powerful account of friendship and loss. In Al Tafar, Iraq, twenty-one-year-old Private Bartle and eighteen-year-old Private Murphy cling to life as their platoon launches a bloody battle for the city. Bound together since basic training when Bartle makes a promise to bring Murphy safely home, the two have been dropped into a war neither is prepared for. In the endless days that follow, the two young soldiers do everything to protect each other from the forces that press in on every side: the insurgents, physical fatigue, and the mental stress that comes from constant danger. As reality begins to blur into a hazy nightmare, Murphy becomes increasingly unmoored from the world around him and Bartle takes actions he could never have imagined.

THE BOY KINGS OF TEXAS by Domingo Martinez 9780762779192 $18.95 Globe Pequot Press

About the Book

Domingo Martinez lays bare his interior and exterior worlds as he struggles to make sense of the violent and the ugly, along with the beautiful and the loving, in a Texas border town in the 1980s. Partly a reflection on the culture of machismo and partly an exploration of the author’s boyhood spent in his sister’s hand-me-down clothes, The Boy Kings of Texas delves into the enduring and complex bond between Martinez and his deeply flawed but fiercely protective older brother, Daniel, and features a cast of memorable characters. Charming, painful and enlightening, this book examines the traumas and pleasures of growing up in South Texas and the often terrible consequences when two very different cultures collide on the banks of a dying river.

America's most notorious family feud began in 1865 with the murder of a Harmon McCoy, a Union soldier, by a Confederate Hatfield relative. But Southern grudges run long and deep. More than a decade later tempers flared over stolen hogs. This accusation triggered years of bloody violence and retribution that led to a tragic Romeo-and-Juliet interlude, a Supreme Court ruling, and Kentucky’s last public hanging. The final feud trial took place in 1898, but the rivalry didn’t end there. Its legend continues to have an enormous impact on the popular imagination and the people of the region.
