Move over grandma : Cooking a la mode gets MODERN!

Pan, measuring cup, oven, test-tube, ultrasonic bath (aka jewellery cleaner), blow torch... all the cooking equipment required to make a feast. Yes. You heard me right. I said blowtorch ... and ultrasonic bath ... and I inferred that they belong in your kitchen! You just can't make the perfect meringue or the ideal crispy french fry without them these days. But if you're curious, I suggest you pick up a copy of the revolutionary Modern Cuisine at Home (The Cooking Lab, 9780982761014) or go to Global TV's website for their new current affairs show 16X9 to see the authors Dr. Nathan Myhrvold and Maxime Bilet in action. They leave you with a true appreciation for the art and science of cooking, and a hunger for the future when food will only get more delicious. You can watch a clip of the show online here.  The full episode aired on television November 9th.

Sh*tty Mom: The Parenting Guide for the Rest of Us | ABRAMS

We don’t read many parenting books that leave us hunched over laughing in our chairs. Occasionally we come across gems like “Go the F*ck to Sleep,” or the Globe Pequot Press new fall title “Kid in the Crib” (ISBN 9780762783045), but these types of books are rare. Luckily for us this fall Abrams is releasing the hilarious new parenting guide "Sh*tty Mom: The Parenting Guide for the Rest of Us" by Laurie Kilmartin, Karen Moline, Alicia Ybarbo, and Mary Ann Zoellner.  Sh*tty Mom offers practical advice like "How to Leave Your Kids to Go on a Business Trip," "And Sometimes the Asshole Is You," and "You Aren't Paranoid, Everyone Does Hate Your Baby." Sh*tty Mom is funny, relatable, at times brutally honest, and the perfect book for new and experienced moms.

Abrams asked a few of the moms in their office to divulge the chapters they related to the most and then shared them on their blog. We thought you would love reading it as much as we did.

Here are a few but definitely check out the rest here:

How to Get Rid of a Mom Who Wants to Stay Over During the Entire Play date: Every mom has had this moment. You think you’re going to have some “free” time while the kids play together, only to have the other mom plop down on the couch to chat for three hours. Remember: If you want to make a new friend, open some wine. If you don’t, open the door. –National Account Manager Jody Mosley’s pick

Someone Stole Your Baby Name! Aka Ballad of the First Aidan Mom: “I hope you don’t mind, but we were thinking of naming our baby [your child’s name].” Don’t let that happen to you! Remember: If you don’t say anything, your daughter “Olivia” will instead be known as “Olivia C. The blonde Olivia C.”

–Editor Dervla Kelly’s pick

Unspeakable Evil: Private Birthday Party – with a Bouncy Castle – at a Public Park: There is a special place in hell for parents who have their kid’s birthday party in a public park AND rent a bouncy castle. (And that hell is a never-ending kid’s birthday party with two bouncy castles.)Remember: It’s never too early to start resenting the kind-of rich kids. –Editorial Director Lindley Boegehold’s pick

"The most inappropriate parenting book I've ever read. Loved it." Jessica Seinfeld

Lose Weight, Prevent Disease, and Feel Great!

Do you crave sugar and carbs? Do you have belly fat, high blood pressure, or a family history of diabetes?  If you answered yes to any of the questions above, read on. . .

According to Dr. Mark Hyman, there are 7 keys to achieving wellness, and they involve nutrition, hormones, inflammation, digestion, detoxification, energy metabolism, and a calm mind.  The secret solution?  Balancing your insulin levels!  The book focuses on drug-free approaches to regulating your blood sugar and it all begins with eating real, whole foods and cutting out the processed junk full of wheat and sugar.  There are several questionnaires throughout the book that help you determine where you can start making change, as well as stories from individuals who decided to take charge of their health and managed to turn their lives around on Dr. Hyman’s plan.  For some inspiration, check out some incredible success stories HERE.

With advice on diet, green living, supplements and medication, exercise, and personalizing the plan for optimal results, the book also teaches readers how to maintain lifelong health.  President Bill Clinton and wellness warrior Kris Carr are huge fans – need I say more?
