Lucian Freud
The only comprehensive retrospective on one of the great painters of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries

SPECIFICATIONS:

Format: 2-volume Set
Size: 353 x 273 mm (13 7/8 x 10 3/4 in)
Pages: 616 pp
Illustrations: 486 illustrations
ISBN: 9780714875262

With more than 480 illustrations, this is the most comprehensive publication to date on one of the greatest painters of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Lucian Freud.

Lucian Freud was one of the most significant artists of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, and Phaidon is honoured to publish the most complete retrospective of his career to date.

This sumptuous, definitive set is the result of an extraordinary collaboration between David Dawson – Director of the Lucian Freud Archive and for two decades Freud’s assistant, model, and friend – author Martin Gayford, and editor Mark Holborn.

Their collaboration has resulted in a book that goes beyond the work to reveal insights into the man himself. Gayford describes Freud’s determination always to tell the truth about what he was recording in paint. He believed in a found beauty, not one that was imagined by an artist and then imposed on his subject. He painted what he saw, in exquisite detail, and he found it beautiful.

With more than 480 illustrations, Phaidon celebrates that beauty – evoked in portraits of Freud’s friends and family, his lovers, his neighbours, and others whose looks he liked, from his bookmaker to a bank robber.

This is both a vital contribution to art scholarship and a gorgeous addition to the bookshelves of art lovers around the world.

Recapture Your Glory One Brick at a Time

Lego Adventure Book Vol. 2 (9781593275129) By Megan H. Rothrock No Starch Press
Lego Adventure Book Vol. 2 (9781593275129) By Megan H. Rothrock No Starch Press

If you are anything like me, as a youngster you probably thought of yourself as an amateur architect. I, for one, could work miracles given enough time and the right resources. These resources were a giant Rubbermaid bin of Lego bricks, and a rec room floor to dump it all over. But I will admit that I was always better with a good set of instructions at my fingertips.

Whenever I reminisce about “the good old days” I often lament the fact that I no longer build things like I used to. My lamentations were brought to an all time high when I laid my eyes on The Lego Adventure Book Vol. 2. After flipping through the pages, I knew I had to reclaim my former glory and find a floor to spread my Lego over once more.  This book is full of impressive designs and tons of the easy-to-follow instructions that transform me from a mere mortal into a Lego god. Do gods crawl around on all fours and paw through giant piles of Lego? They do now!

From space ships, to dragons, to Tudor Mansions and entire city blocks, this book has something for every Lego enthusiast to enjoy. So, pick up your own copy of The Lego Adventure Book Vol. 2 from No Starch Press and join me in the ever growing pantheon of Lego superstars!

About the author

ABOUT THE BOOK

October Schwartz and her five deadest friends are back. The holiday season has descended upon the town of Sticksville like an eggnog rainstorm, but October has no time for candy canes or mistletoe. She’s busy dealing with an oddly pleasant new history teacher, her living friends’ new roles as high-school radio DJs, and two (!) new mysteries that need solving before the new year. October and her ghost friends are hot on the trail of the person (or persons) responsible for Morna MacIsaac’s death in 1914 — or as hot as one can be on a 100-year-old trail — when

October’s friend Yumi finds herself the target of anti-Asian harassment at school. Solving two mysteries at once won’t be easy, but our intrepid heroine in black eyeliner loves a challenge.

Follow October, Cyril, Tabetha, Morna, Kirby, and Derek as they sleuth their way through a blizzard of suffragettes, iceskating disasters, mystical telephones, and boats named Titanic, all set against a backdrop of yuletide pandemonium.

Frank Book Launch

About the book

Young Frank is an aspiring architect. He lives with his grandfather, Old Frank, who is also an architect, and his spotted dog, Eddie. Using anything he finds—macaroni, pillows, toilet paper, shoes—Young Frank likes to make buildings that twist, chairs with zigzag legs, and even entire cities. But Old Frank disapproves, saying architects only create buildings. One day they go to The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. There, they see work by two famous architects named Frank: Frank Gehry’s cardboard wiggly chair and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Broadacre City project, among other things. Old Frank sees that architects can do more than he thought they could. Together, Old Frank and Young Frank go home and create structures of every shape and size, “tall ones, squat ones, tubular ones, and just plain weird ones,” using whatever they can get their hands on, even cookies! At the end of the day, Young Frank feels a little older, and Old Frank feels a little younger—and a little wiser.

Praise for Young Frank, Architect "Spontaneous play any budding architect can appreciate." --Publishers Weekly

MANDAtory Reading 01-13-11

Move over Lisbeth Salander, there’s a new Scandinavian crime thriller in town and it plans on sticking around for a while!  THREE SECONDS swiftly snagged the #9 spot on the NYT bestseller list this week after only a brief time in bookstores.  We have a feeling this early success is just the tip of the iceberg for Anders Roslund and Borge Hellström.  Read it people, you won’t be disappointed.

Jerry Robinson’s new coffee table tome  Jerry Robinson: Ambassador of Comics was profiled on Sneakpeek and picked up by IMBD. If you’re a comics fan, you’ll know that Robinson is one of the living legends of American comics, and a member of the original Batman team.

The Montreal Gazette suggests the book YUCK! The Things People Eat may help folks lose a few pounds. Check out the article here and let us know what you think of this... um, unique weight-loss technique.

For all of you Design-y types, guess who’s coming to Toronto for IDS11?  You’ll never guess so I’m just gonna spill it...Allegra Hicks!  Allegra will be on stage speaking with Amy Verner from the Globe and Mail at 4PM on Saturday, January 29th and signing copies of her new book Allegra Hicks: An Eye For Design directly after. Click here for more information.  If you weren’t planning on attending the show but are interested in Allegra’s spring decorating tips and learning more about the book, she is scheduled to be a guest on The Marilyn Denis Show Friday, January 28th.

Lastly, if you haven’t yet heard of Kris Carr, I would like to make the formal introduction now.  Kris is a Cancer survivor who has transformed the way she eats, lives and views the world and it all started with a low-glycemic, vegetarian diet.  Her program focuses on balancing the pH of the body with whole and raw foods, organic green drinks, and smoothies.  If this sounds complicated – trust me, she explains it much better than I ever could!  Her New Book Crazy Sexy Diet debunks diet myths, shares tips on how to detox safely, and even how to grocery shop!  It is witty, accessible, powerful, and beautifully illustrated.  Enough said.  See this month’s Best Health Magazine for a review.

Judith and Her Jewels

(ISBN 978-1845335632)

As the legend has it, Judith Miller began collecting costume jewelry at the beginning of the cultural revolution of the 1960’s, while a student at Edinburgh University in Scotland.  But whether hunting for her next piece in clandestine antique shops near the University or scouring for pieces at the Antique Roadshow, Judith has always had a knack for finding the unexpected, the beautiful and the rare at just the right moment.  When Judith launched the best-selling Miller’s Antique Price Guide in 1979, she helped fuel the desire for antiques, collectables and costume jewelry through her intellect, wit and sharp eye for dazzling objects that appealed to both new and old collectors.

This year Judith has once again reminded us how she is still one of the best at finding the most coveted gems and why costume jewelry still has its place in fashion and society with her new book Costume Jewelry (ISBN 9781845335632). This beautifully photographed book guides the reader through a comprehensive introduction to costume jewelry – through Ancient Egypt, Medieval France and 19th century America – and further provides the most authoritative information on 20thcentury jewelry by iconic names such as Trifari, Coro, Chanel and Dior as well as showcases exciting new designers like Erickson Beamon, Mawi and Eddie Borgo.

Judith recently visited Toronto, Ontario to talk about her book, her addiction to costume jewelry and to pick up a few Canadian pieces for her personal collection.   After Judith caught up with Dina on Breakfast Television, we followed close behind as she scouted jewels at two fantastic Toronto antique shops - Twice Found and Cynthia Findlay Antiques.  See photos below!

Manda Books in the News

The fabulous CBC food writer Shaun Smith has written a fascinating photo essay that includes two food books of ours that I felt compelled to share.  Foodie or not, I would recommend you all check out the photo gallery.  From the pleasant deception of a broccoli tree forest (from Food Landscapes by Carl Warner) to carefully placed fish heads bobbing in an English pie (from YUCK!: The Things People Eat by Neil Setchfield), I was equal parts delighted and horrified at what I saw here.  Click on the Brocoli Forest image and enjoy!

Would you shop in a cargo container? Would you live in one?

Container AtlasI've got a bit of a thing for architecture and design.  Just looking, mind you, not actually participating.  Right now, what's got my attention is a recently published book called Container Atlas: A Practical Guide to Container Architecture (ISBN 9783899552867).  It's pretty fantastic!  Not only does it boast over 200 pages of actual projects, but the first 50 or so pages discuss everything from the history of shipping containers to construction physics to the economic and ecological aspects surrounding container use as a building material. As for the projects; there's an Illy coffee shop, a sauna, bathrooms for a summer camp, a Puma retail store and any number of offices and residences.  If you're at all interested in this type of quirky architecture or in large-scale re-usability; or, if you just like cool pictures of cool things, this could be the next book for you.  And, oh yeah, while the bulk of the projects are from Europe, there are four Canadian entries, my favourite of which is the Chalet de Chemin Brochu.  I dare you to tell me it's not a great-looking place!
