Cuckoo 4 Cookbooks!

I am admittedly not a great cook, yet ironically I am cuckoo for cookbooks! I love looking at the mouthwatering images, reading the step by step instructions that make every recipe seem so simple. . . so manageable! Below are a few of the beautiful Stewart Tabori and Chang cookbooks I’m looking forward to cracking open this spring.  The folks at STC make stunning books with quality and content that is always fresh and interesting. . .

In CakeLove in the Morning, Warren covers everything: pancakes and French toast, frittatas and omelets, quick breads and cereals, bacon and biscuits. He adds his own trademark twists on classic recipes so you’ll soon be making Coconut Waffles with Bananas Foster topping, Breakfast Lasagna, or Multigrain Rum Raisin Scones. CAKELOVE: In The Morning By Warren Brown | $27.95; 9781584798941 | May 2012

As a child in America, Giuliano Hazan’s mother, Marcella, packed him meatballs with potatoes and peas, veal stew with mushrooms, and other homemade dishes for lunch—dishes that in no way resembled the peanut butter sandwiches his classmates enjoyed. And so began his appreciation of great food. Hazan Family Favorites celebrates delicious recipes from the Hazan family, prepared just as Giuliano prepares them for his own family today.  Hazan Family Favorites By Hazan Giuliano | $32.95; 9781584799047 | May 2012

Expect lattice and cutouts with an entirely modern twist. Homemade puff pastry made easy. Individual pie pops to replace tired cupcakes. Surprising and wildly successful explorations with beer (Chocolate Stout Pudding Pie), exotic fruits (Yuzu-Ginger Rice Pudding Meringue Pie), and candy making (Earl Grey Truffle Tart). Pie It Forward by Gesine Bullock Prado | $32.95; 9781584799634 | April 2012

In Praise of Bookstores

As a teenager I used to love going to my local bookshop, grabbing a coffee and getting lost in the aisles. When it was time to go, I would always have a stack of books to narrow down to make one or two purchases. I loved everything about those visits: the quiet, the friendly staff, the plethora of books to rummage through…

In that vein, I’d like to share a few lists praising bookstores that I would love to one day visit:

What a Display!

We just had to share this killer display of Pomegranate journals and puzzles put together by The Bookmark in Halifax! Who wouldn’t get excited at the thought of sinking their teeth into a 1000 piece Jackson Pollock puzzle on a cold winter’s night?  1000 pieces!?  Whoa!

Pomegranate products are spectac for many reasons, not the least of which being the impeccable quality of the craftsmanship and raw materials that go into every greeting card,  journal and book they create.  They also get props for being fully fluent in the language of Canadian art

James Patterson’s Private Series is Infectious!

Having James Patterson‘s name on a book cover is enough to intrigue some readers to pick it up. For those of you who don’t fit into this fan-base, and don’t know where to start in the multitude of books available from this author, I wanted to highlight a fairly new series which caught my attention after hearing a rave review from our office manager.

The series started in 2010 with Private, which introduces former Marine helicopter pilot Jack Morgan now running a private investigation company. The second book in the series is Private: #1 Suspect, and the third, coming out on February 13th 2012 is called Private Games (ISBN 9780316206822).

The upcoming book is part of the series, but can stand on its own since it had mostly new characters. The story is set in London leading up to and during the 2012 summer Olympic Games. If you’re looking for a book to take your mind off the dreary winter weather, check this one out!

ME…JANE

“This remarkable picture book is one of the few that speaks, in a meaningful way, to all ages.”       (Booklist, starred review )

“McDonnell’s skill as a cartoonist enables him to express Goodall’s joy, wonder and satisfaction with a simple stroke of the pen.”     (New York Times )

A big congratulations to author Patrick McDonnell and his publisher Little Brown & Company Books for Young Readers, whose delightful tale Me… Jane has been awarded a Coldecott Honor (given to the artist of the most distinguished American picture books), and has also been chosen as Booklist Magazine’s TOP OF THE LIST, for the single best  book of the year in picture books!

This gorgeous picture book tells the story of Jane Goodall and the special relationship she forms as a small child with a stuffed chimpanzee named Jubilee.  As the young Jane observes the natural world around her with wonder, she dreams of “a life living with and helping all animals,” until one day she finds that her dream has come true!

Me… Jane by Patrick McDonnell (Little Brown & Co.), ISBN: 9780316045469, Retail Price: $17.99 CAN, Hardcover
