All those things Michael Helm mentioned were great concepts/inventions, but they've been redesigned and updated over the years out of practicality. Now it's the book's turn...

It's interesting that the older people are so receptive to the idea. They're most concerned with content and availability. The young ones who all claim to love the 'feel' of it seem so pretentious... they love people seeing what they read.

I just think if you really love a book, you need to own it in its physical form. You share (in the traditional sense) with friends, pass it on to your kids, inscribe it for your wife. Whatever! My favourite read of the past ten years, Barney's Version, was loaned to me before a trip. I'll never forget the person who loaned it to me, or carrying it around on my trip. Could I have had the same experience with an iPad?

Plus, literature survived thousands of years as a written document...you can burn thousands of books, but somewhere the written word will remain on a page. So I worry as a ePub file on a hard drive, it's simply too easy to delete...

Then again, the ancient Greeks, most notably Socrates, often argued against the written word. They said it would increase forgetfulness, since you could just write something down and not have to remember it. Let that be a lesson to all those who put down new ways of spreading the "word."
