Learning About a Dutch Master

Tim’s Vermeer is now showing until Thursday at TIFF Bell Lightbox thanks to Mongrel Media. It’s a film with a pretty interesting concept. It follows Inventor Tim Jenison on his journey to understand how Vermeer was able to paint with such realism. For a better synopsis, I encourage you to watch the trailer below. I can almost guarantee you’ll be fascinated.

It is completely understandable that someone like Jenison, would be wary about how Vermeer was able to create such masterpieces. After all, his paintings are nearly flawless. So flawless that I'm tempted to join Jenison in believing that Vermeer had an incredibly complicated method, just to feel better about my own abilities. That said, the trailer leaves me wanting to know more about Vermeer and his techniques, and luckily enough I know just how to find out. After I’ve gone to one of this week’s screenings I’m going to follow it up with some light reading:

A good place to start is with Vermeer: The Complete Paintings from Abrams. This book, which is a survey of all of Vermeer’s works, will help a reader familiarize themselves with the artist’s catalog immediately.

Next, let's jump to Masters of Art: Vermeer from Prestel Publishing, the perfect read to help us understand the more intricate portions of Vermeer’s works.

This book offers full-page spreads of masterpieces as well as highlights of smaller details--allowing the viewer to appreciate every aspect of the artist's technique and oeuvre.

Tell me that doesn't sound like a great way to understand the method of our favorite dutch master.

Finally, now that we know all about Vermeer’s work and technique, we can follow in Tim Jenison’s footsteps and create masterpieces of our own. Of course, I’ll have a copy of Colouring Book Jan Vermeer from Prestel to help me in my endeavor. After all, not all of us can be masters!

If you are interested in seeing Tim’s Vermeer click here for show times. Happy painting!

WE LOVE EACH OTHER | New York Times Book Review

We all know "find love before V-DAY" is at the bottom of your February to-do list. Readers follow an adorable chipmunk family for a fun outing at the park, a special homemade cake after dinner, and a snuggle before bedtime—and all the while mom and dad find dozens of ways, big and small, to give their children the affection and security they crave. Sarah Harrison Smith of The New York Times Book Review wrote, "Sprightly rather than soppy, “Love You More Than Anything” reminds readers that having fun together is one of the best ways families can show their love, whatever the day."

MY BASMATI BAT MITZVAH Named Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2013

Paula J. Freedman's young adult novel MY BASMATI BAT MITZVAH has been named a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2013:

"The latest spunky heroine of South Asian–Jewish heritage to grace middle-grade fiction, Tara Feinstein, 12, charms readers from the get-go in this strong, funny debut." Kirkus Reviews, starred review

9781419708060

Other Praise for My Basmati Bat Mitzvah "Tara’s inquisitiveness, openness, and determination to chart her own path stand out in this warm story of family, faith and the ways people are unique yet intertwined." —Publishers Weekly

"This story will have resonance for many children of many faiths at the cusp of religious adulthood." —Booklist

"As she makes her way through these challenges, she learns a great deal about friendship, family, and heritage. Freedman handles the ethnic and religious diversity of Tara’s family and friends with a light touch, but doesn’t shrink from exploring some of the complexities of a dual heritage." —School Library Journal

About the book During the fall leading up to her bat mitzvah, Tara (Hindi for “star”) Feinstein has a lot more than her Torah portion on her mind. Between Hebrew school and study sessions with the rabbi, there doesn’t seem to be enough time to hang out with her best friend Ben-O—who might also be her boyfriend—and her other best friend, Rebecca, who’s getting a little too cozy with the snotty Sheila Rosenberg. Not to mention working on her robotics project with the class clown Ryan Berger, or figuring out what to do with a priceless heirloom sari that she accidentally ruined. Amid all this drama, Tara considers how to balance her Indian and Jewish identities and what it means to have a bat mitzvah while questioning her faith. With the cross-cultural charm of Bend It Like Beckham, this delightful debut novel is a classic coming-of-age story and young romance with universal appeal.

About the author Paula J. Freedman has another career in digital media, making websites for a well-known children’s publisher, a TV network, and assorted others. She’s pretty much the same person she was in middle school, only nicer and with less acne. She lives with her husband and two parrots in New York City.

Buy a stack to stuff inside the handmade stockings of your knitting-circle friends.” —Vogue Knitting

“If you are a knitter, or even if you are not, read this book for the sheer joy of her writing, for the way she strings ideas together and brings you into her world . . . I would compare her to Mark Twain because of her dry humor. Honestly, she’s that good.” —New Jersey Courier News’ In Sticthes blog

“It is seriously the best book about knitting experiences ever. I absolutely LOVED it!” —Sweetly Made

Frank Book Launch

About the book

Young Frank is an aspiring architect. He lives with his grandfather, Old Frank, who is also an architect, and his spotted dog, Eddie. Using anything he finds—macaroni, pillows, toilet paper, shoes—Young Frank likes to make buildings that twist, chairs with zigzag legs, and even entire cities. But Old Frank disapproves, saying architects only create buildings. One day they go to The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. There, they see work by two famous architects named Frank: Frank Gehry’s cardboard wiggly chair and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Broadacre City project, among other things. Old Frank sees that architects can do more than he thought they could. Together, Old Frank and Young Frank go home and create structures of every shape and size, “tall ones, squat ones, tubular ones, and just plain weird ones,” using whatever they can get their hands on, even cookies! At the end of the day, Young Frank feels a little older, and Old Frank feels a little younger—and a little wiser.

Praise for Young Frank, Architect "Spontaneous play any budding architect can appreciate." --Publishers Weekly
