Every kid knows that nothing's funnier than a fart joke. And it's also a universal truth (and mysterious fact) that people don't mind the smell of their own farts. Animal Gas explores this hilarious concept through a parade of animals who describe why they don't think their own farts stink—against the truth about how they REALLY smell!

About the book

Michael Showalter’s Guys Can Be Cat Ladies Too is the hilarious all-access guide to help a man comprehend, appreciate, and bond with the felines in his life. They say dogs are a man’s best friend. True! But what if that man’s girlfriend/boyfriend, wife/husband, or mother-in-law has a cat? Is that the end for him? Is he resigned to an eternity of estrangement from this furry creature with which he shares his life partner, his favorite chair, and his sock drawer?

Showalter offers hope for men everywhere in their quest to understand and love cats. In this intimate portrait of one man’s love for cats, you will learn the answers to burning questions such as: “Why are they all aloof and weird and stuff?”; “They hate me, right?”; and “Is it true that they have nine lives?” Armed with these and countless other valuable lessons, by the book’s end any guy can be on the fast track to becoming a cat’s best friend.

WHAT'S THE SCORE? (9781894469623 What-s-the-Score-McFadden-David-W-9781894469623| Mansfield Press) by Toronto Author David McFadden won the Griffin Poetry Prize!

Judges’ Citation

“‘If the fool would persist in his folly, he would become wise,’ advised William Blake in his Proverbs of Hell. As if whispering through the ages into the ear of Canada’s deadpan court jester, Blake’s radical spirit slyly presides over David McFadden’s exuberant thirty-fifth publication, What’s The Score? With their arch yet affable tone, these ninety-nine irreverent and mock-earnest poems lay siege to the feelings of boredom, anxiety, and alienation that afflict a culture obsessed with wealth and prestige, leading us, again and again, down the road of excess to the palace of wisdom. ‘My poems go leaping from crag to crag,’ McFadden boasts in one poem, before quickly, and characteristically, scuttling this Romantic image of the egotistical sublime ‘like a stubble-faced crybaby, it’s probably / because I’ve been writing for so long, / forty years of poems to various friends.’ The easy, casual intimacy of these poems will befriend you on the first page. Their astonishing leaps and their genuine philosophical urgency will compel you to keep reading. ‘Stick around,’ invites this artful and knowing wise fool, ‘everyone should have a chorus / following his steps and reminding him / of his central role in some great dream.’” – Suzanne Buffam

Reflections and Aphorisms_proofAnd finally, Leonidas Donskis won the Essay Writing Prize for the Giuseppe Acerbi Award for A SMALL MAP OF EXPERIENCE: REFLECTIONS & APHORISMS (9781550716603 | Guernica Editions). Robert Ginsberg, Director of The International Center for the Arts, Humanities, and Value Inquiry, wrote, "This is a powerful original contribution to the philosophy of culture. Donskis shows that modernity is perforce always troubled, for we are confronted with competing cultural and political traditions from which we have emerged, while we are obliged to face divergent directions for our next steps. The result of Donskis's bold exploration is an impressive travelogue of the human spirit in which the reader takes an active part. This is truly what must be called an engaging book."

Congratulations to all of the winners!

Sh*tty Mom: The Parenting Guide for the Rest of Us | ABRAMS

We don’t read many parenting books that leave us hunched over laughing in our chairs. Occasionally we come across gems like “Go the F*ck to Sleep,” or the Globe Pequot Press new fall title “Kid in the Crib” (ISBN 9780762783045), but these types of books are rare. Luckily for us this fall Abrams is releasing the hilarious new parenting guide "Sh*tty Mom: The Parenting Guide for the Rest of Us" by Laurie Kilmartin, Karen Moline, Alicia Ybarbo, and Mary Ann Zoellner.  Sh*tty Mom offers practical advice like "How to Leave Your Kids to Go on a Business Trip," "And Sometimes the Asshole Is You," and "You Aren't Paranoid, Everyone Does Hate Your Baby." Sh*tty Mom is funny, relatable, at times brutally honest, and the perfect book for new and experienced moms.

Abrams asked a few of the moms in their office to divulge the chapters they related to the most and then shared them on their blog. We thought you would love reading it as much as we did.

Here are a few but definitely check out the rest here:

How to Get Rid of a Mom Who Wants to Stay Over During the Entire Play date: Every mom has had this moment. You think you’re going to have some “free” time while the kids play together, only to have the other mom plop down on the couch to chat for three hours. Remember: If you want to make a new friend, open some wine. If you don’t, open the door. –National Account Manager Jody Mosley’s pick

Someone Stole Your Baby Name! Aka Ballad of the First Aidan Mom: “I hope you don’t mind, but we were thinking of naming our baby [your child’s name].” Don’t let that happen to you! Remember: If you don’t say anything, your daughter “Olivia” will instead be known as “Olivia C. The blonde Olivia C.”

–Editor Dervla Kelly’s pick

Unspeakable Evil: Private Birthday Party – with a Bouncy Castle – at a Public Park: There is a special place in hell for parents who have their kid’s birthday party in a public park AND rent a bouncy castle. (And that hell is a never-ending kid’s birthday party with two bouncy castles.)Remember: It’s never too early to start resenting the kind-of rich kids. –Editorial Director Lindley Boegehold’s pick

"The most inappropriate parenting book I've ever read. Loved it." Jessica Seinfeld

Superheroes That didn't Make the Cut

Everyone has their favorite superhero. Maybe it's Superman, the man of steel. Or perhaps it's Batman, the billionaire vigilante. No matter who it is, something about them catches our interest. They just work. But what if they didn't? Publisher: Medallion Press ISBN: 9781605422701 CAD $29.99

Fallen Superheroes is an interesting compilation of superheroes that wouldn't quite work. Imagine a superhero with a fatal flaw that was just a little too much. Take Vane for example. Vane is a fantastic hero that can save lives when he has to. But only when he's not completely distracted by the reflection of his beautiful face! Or Viking Hawk! A hero who can't decide  on what to call himself and is completely OCD to the point where gum on his shoe will stop him in his tracks!

This book strives to show us the vulnerability of life, our embarassing failures, and those colorful people who dare to dream light-years ahead of themselves. Sometimes, those with the most extraordinary abilities are the most ordinary people. And sometimes, it's the heroes who need the rescuing.

Gobbledygook

Have you ever heard someone say a word that you thought was absolutely made-up? Something that sounded so outrageous it couldn't posibly be real? Well, you might find that word in this book. ISBN: 9781440528187 Publisher: Adams Media CAD $15.99

Gobbledygook is the most fun, and interesting dictionary that you'll ever set your eyes on. However, it's not your traditional dictionary. Rather than containing every word in the English language, this book captures only the ridiculous ones. But not all of the words in here actually exist! That's the fun part! Only two of the three words per page are actualy correct, but all sound equally absurd.

For example: If you had to choose between nalophile, acrophony, and dreddour, which one's the fake? Don't look at us, you'll have to find out for yourself!

Summer Hangover

Last summer, the Hungover Owls Tumblr took the internet by storm.  Hilarious, crude, and sometimes not-safe-for-work captions, combined with photos of owls squinting, gawking, snuggling, and sleeping make for the perfect storm of LOL-humor. With over 80 percent never-before -published content, this new book is an ideal gift for Back to School. A word to the wise, perhaps?
