Monkey Bubble Bread...Boston Cream Pie...Heartland Turtle Bars...Buttermilk Doughnuts...  I don't know about you, but these desserts take me back to a time when I was young, life was slow and desserts were oh so fun!  If you're in the mood for a trip down memory lane, you and your taste buds should check out Baked Explorations: Classic American Desserts Reinvented by Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito (Stewart Tabori & Chang, $35.95).  The authors take liberties on some classics - but without making them too precious which seems to be the unfortunate trend these days.  As far as I'm concerned, this gorgeous new tome on all things baked (ahem) truly takes the cake.  If you don't believe me, check out this review in the Globe and Mail, together we should have you convinced.
